  • Pair of antique Italian Sgabello hall chairs with intricate romayne panels and grotesque masks,surrounded by ribbons and foliage. Late 18th/early 19th century. The word Scabello comes from the Latin for stool - scabellum. An earlier pair with similar carving to the lower front 'legs' are in The Metropolitan Museum in New York. The company were the largest producers of playing cards in the 19th century, making three quarters of all those made This portrait hung in the Goodall factory from around 1840 until the closure of the works in 1922.
